After the light and healthy salads of last week (complemented by sneaky ice-creams, obviously), the rain has gotten me thinking about more hearty foods again, and there’s nothing I crave right now more than a decent burger with all the trimmings.
A few years ago, the best burger in the city was possibly one from the local chip shop, which was about half a step above McDonalds and Burger King in my rankings, but now there’s loads of places to get burgers. And not just any old burgers – burgers with real, decent cuts of meat, plenty of flavour, and accompanied by a bucket of fries.
It’s fair to say that there’s been a burger revolution in Manchester in recent years, and now you can get your kicks from the likes of Five Guys, Byron, Almost Famous, and my favourite, Gourmet Burger Kitchen.
GBK were one of the first ‘proper’ burger chains in the city, and they’re still doing it right. There’s something about their ‘Taxidriver’ burger which my tongue finds irresistible. It might be the burgers, the relish, the bap or even the onion ring, but whatever it is, it’s delicious. My colleague swears by their ‘Classic beef’ burger, but I think I have more refined taste buds – as proven by my preference for their Truffle cheese fries. Oh my?!
One of the great things about GBK is that CityCard members can get 30% off food at their Spinningfields restaurant – which means the more you eat, the more you save… See you there in 10?!
