As a religious follower of rugby (or at least, pretending to care about the Rugby, but mainly using it as an excuse for afternoon drinking), I’ve been touring the sports bars of Manchester over the last few weekends.
One place I’ve watched the egg-chasing was a proper old mans’ pub (terrible - no atmosphere, even when we were two tries to the good?!), another was a craft ale bar (where the screen was so small that it may as well not’ve been there – we ended up following the action on my mates phone?!), and then there was one that has left me genuinely impressed (and looking forward to going back to!): step forward, Walkabout.
Walkabout ticked all the boxes by having plenty enough screens to watch the sport, but also providing decent beer at a reasonable price, and actually be attractive enough to others to propagate a bit of atmosphere – a friendly atmosphere that helps you to get into the game, let off some steam, and shout and cheer!
They also scored bonus points by doing me a really good burger, but that was technically after the hooter, so I’m not sure if that counts as a reason why they’re one of the best sports bars in the city?!
Doubtless it will be packed for the football in the evenings too, so I suppose I could even be persuaded to get into watching a bit of mid-week European action!
