Whether you made it out into the city centre or not earlier this week, you can’t’ve missed that fact that the Olympic homecoming parade for Team GB – after their most successful games EVER! – was held in the streets of Manchester, the UK’s capital of sport!
And what better city to have it in than Manchester – aside from being THE city when it comes to sport, it’s also the city of real Great Britains: London is full of tourists and only the super-rich can afford to live there; Manchester is a living, breathing city, full of real people that felt genuine joy and jubilation for each one of Team GB’s incredible 67 Olympic medals!
It was great to see so many people out to celebrate and welcome Team GB home. Despite the typical Manchester October (/year-round) weather, the medal-winners were greeted by literally thousands and thousands of supporters, spectators, and well-wishers – all braving the elements to see their heroes of the summer in the flesh.
You could almost feel the excitement when the buses came towards us, and there was an electric atmosphere. Being Olympians, they’re so much better than the usual celebrities I’ve seen: these are people who have made real sacrifices to get to where they are today. I’m proud to be able to say that I was there (and – claim to fame - I think one of the gymnasts even waved directly at me!) and it’s a day that I’ll remember for years to come.
