Wow! What an MFDF! After spending the weekend in the delightful sunshine in the Festival Hub, I’m semi-disappointed (but also semi-proud) that it’s taken me the best part of three days to recover from the MFDF annual awards gala after-party!
The gala itself was a glittering spectacular, with the great and good of the Manchester food and drink scene descending onto the Palace hotel in the city centre and enjoying a truly splendid drinks reception and meal, before the annual awards were announced.
Thankfully, we weren’t one of the nominees for one of the awards, so there wasn’t too much nervousness at the CityCard table: though the boss did have the task of presenting the award we sponsor – the ‘Best Chef’ award – so he had to be careful how much he drank!
The winner of the CityCard award was the incredible Terry Huang of Umezushi – if you haven’t been there yet, they’re definitely somewhere worth trying.
The event really was a celebration of food – with winners from the best pop up event (Stockport’s monthly Foodie Friday), to the best restaurant (Hawksmoor), best casual dining (Volta) and the best newcomer (El Gato Negro)
Perhaps the most notable thing was the sheer strength in depth of nominees in all categories: the city is chock-full of amazing places to eat and drink, and anyone who says that Manchester isn’t an outstanding foodie city should be made to eat their hat.
