Finally, 321 days after the last bratwurst disappeared from our streets, the Manchester Christmas markets are back! And this year, they’re bigger and better than ever!
After the amazing lights switch-on last Saturday, the markets already look like they’re ready and raring to go, and they finally open the doors (or sales-windows?) THIS Friday! (and lasting until Sunday 23rd December!)
Alongside there’ll usual wafting smells of bratwurst, hog roasts, pancakes, gluhwein and hot chocolate, you’ll also find the delicious smells of grilled cheese (Manchester based Northern Soul have even crafted a ‘Grilled Cheese Chrimbo Burger’ for the occasion), hot cookie dough, and a new stall dedicated to local real ale!
Given that it already takes over much of the city, it’s hard to believe that it can get any bigger, but there’s an extra 34 stalls across the event, with a new ice village in Cathedral Gardens, and new trinkets and drinking venues around Spinningfields, to complement the return of the Oast House.
But the thing that you can’t buy at the markets (and arguably the thing that makes it feel special) is the general Christmas spirit and goodwill in the air – everyone getting along, with smiles on their faces, helps to create such a positively jovial atmosphere that you’re disappointed when 9pm comes and you’re ushered back out onto Manchester’s streets.
If you’re in Manchester in the next few weeks, be sure to head to the markets – you certainly won’t regret it!
